Prevent Summer Slide: Build Reading Confidence with Our Lively Letters Summer Intensive

Aimee Brueck • June 17, 2026

Summer is a time for fun, family vacations, pool days, and a much-needed break from the school routine. But for many children, summer can also bring something educators call the “summer slide” the loss of important academic skills during the months away from school.

For children who struggle with reading, language, or literacy confidence, those gaps can grow even wider over the summer months.

That’s why Progressive Pediatric Therapy created our Summer Private Reading Intensive — a personalized, one-to-one literacy experience designed to help children strengthen foundational reading skills while building confidence and momentum before the new

school year begins.

Using the trusted Lively Letters® approach, our summer program combines evidence-based literacy instruction with engaging, multisensory learning strategies that help children stay motivated and successful.

What Is a Summer Slide?

The “summer slide” refers to the decline in academic skills that can happen when children are out of school for extended periods of time.

Research shows that many students can lose significant progress in reading and literacy skills over summer break, especially children who already struggle with reading, phonemic awareness, or language-based learning challenges.

Children may return to school needing extra support with:

  • letter recognition
  • reading fluency
  • decoding skills
  • reading confidence
  • comprehension
  • phonics and sound-letter connections

The good news? Consistent, engaging literacy support over the summer can make a major difference.

What Is Lively Letters®?

Lively Letters® is a research-based, multisensory reading program that helps children connect sounds to letters through stories, visuals, movement, and memorable learning strategies.

Instead of relying on rote memorization, Lively Letters makes literacy learning interactive and engaging, helping children better retain and apply reading skills.

The program supports:

  • letter recognition
  • sound-symbol association
  • phonemic awareness
  • decoding skills
  • reading fluency foundations
  • literacy confidence

Lively Letters is especially helpful for:

  • struggling readers
  • children with dyslexia
  • speech and language delays
  • active learners
  • children needing stronger reading foundations

While ideal for children in PreK through 2nd grade, older children who struggle with reading may also benefit.

Why Families Love the Lively Letters Approach

Multi-Sensory Learning:

Lively Letters combines visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles to help children better understand and retain literacy concepts. This approach is particularly beneficial for children who learn best through movement, visuals, and hands-on engagement.

Engaging and Confidence-Building:

The program uses memorable characters, storytelling, and interactive activities that make reading instruction feel fun instead of frustrating. As children experience success, confidence often grows alongside their reading skills.

Every child learns differently. That’s why our Summer Private Reading Intensive is offered in a one-to-one format, allowing instruction to be tailored to each child’s strengths, needs, and learning style.

In today’s technology-driven world, many children are moving less than previous generations. While screens and busy schedules can make life easier in some ways, they also mean fewer opportunities for children to build the movement skills their bodies need.

Every baby’s journey is unique, but for families of premature infants, early development often looks and feels a little different. If your baby was born before 37 weeks of pregnancy, they’re considered “preterm” — and you’re not alone. Nearly 1 in 10 babies worldwide are born prematurely each year.
